The butterfly is significant because Njunjul tried to help the butterfly out his cocoon but ends up killing him. Butterflies need to struggle out of their cocoon because it makes them breathe, which shows that Njunjul needs to help himself and that no-one else can help him. He needs to figure stuff out on his own to be able to 'breathe'.

he just wants the butterfly to live a great life but unfortunatley it is hard for the butterfly to come out of its cacoon
