One of the key themes in the novel is growing up. Njunjul grows up throughtout the book because he gets involved in a relationship with Rhonda that probably isnt the best thing for him, but in the end he learns from it and becomes a man. Another way he grew up is that at the start of the book he was messed up and he wasnt confident with the fact that he was an aboriginal, but in the end he gets over the bad things in his life and he learns that being an aboriginal isnt a bad thing.
